Gatebot & Gatebotcar by OPE Alumni, Walnut Creek Middle School

Robot Exhibition Description

My exhibition robot is called "Gatebot & Gatebotcar". What happens is that a car (gatebotcar) detects a traffic light. If the traffic light is green, it starts to move. If it is red gatebotcar waits until the light turns green, or if there is no color the car starts to beep. Gatebotcar starts to move, it hits the gatebot's two light sensors. Once Gatebotcar is detected by Gatebot's two light sensors, the gate is triggered and opens. The gate has a large gear on the gate piece and a worm gear on the motor. Then Gatebotcar goes past the gate and stops at Gatebot's RCX. Finally, Gatebotcar sends an IR message to Gatebot that says, "close the gate". Then the gate closes behind the Gatebotcar.

Materials - Gatebot: 1 motor, 2 light sensors, 1 large gear, 1 RCX, and 1 worm gear. Gatebotcar: 2 motors, 3 light sensors, 4 wheels, 1 RCX, and 4 large gears.

Story - In the future the gates to big buildings will be animatronic. They will be able to tell who is a friend and who isn't just by the license plates. On the gate base there will be a streetlight that has two lights, a green and a red. When the green light is on, the car can go through and park. If the light is red the car will wait until it receives a green light. Once that happens the lasers read the license plate, if it is a friend the gate will open, and the car can go through. If it's an enemy's car the gate will stay closed. Finally the gate will close automatically behind the friendly car once it has entered.
